Single ikat: only one thread carries the design
In single ikat, only one set of threads — typically the weft — is pre-dyed with the pattern. The other (the warp) is left completely plain, usually a single solid color.
Take a background dyed red, for example: only one thread carries the actual design; the rest of the warp is simply red, with no pattern at all. Because only one thread needs to align with the design, the weaving is faster — there's no matching required between warp and weft.
Double ikat: both threads carry the same design — and they have to match, exactly
In double ikat — the technique used for Patola — both the warp and the weft are independently tie-dyed with the same design before weaving even begins.
That means the red on the warp has to land in exactly the same place as the red on the weft, the green has to align with green, and so on, thread by thread, across the entire saree.
Only when both sets align precisely does the final motif — sharp, doubled, "double effect" — actually appear. If the alignment is even slightly off, the design simply doesn't form.
Why this matters when you're comparing sarees
This is the real, technical reason double ikat takes exponentially longer to weave and costs significantly more than single ikat — it isn't a pricing decision, it's a direct consequence of the technique. how much harder the technique is to execute correctly. Understanding this difference is the easiest way to know exactly what you're paying for, and why.
