A saree with no wrong side

There's a small, practical magic to a Patola saree that most people never notice until it's pointed out: it doesn't have a front or a back.

The weave on the reverse side is identical to the front — not similar, not close, but exactly the same. It's a technical feat that simply isn't possible to replicate any other way. And it doesn't stop at the body of the saree. The pallu — the decorative end-piece — is woven the same on both sides too.

What this means in practice

There's no "right way" to drape a Patola. No wrong side to accidentally show, no careful folding to hide a duller reverse. You can wear it, and let the pallu fall, from any direction — the saree simply looks finished, everywhere, all the time.

It's a small detail. But it's also proof of everything else this craft claims about itself: nothing here is a shortcut, and nothing is left undone on the side no one's supposed to see.
