The loom you won't find anywhere else

Behind every Patan Patola saree is a piece of equipment as rare as the weave itself: a hanging loom, lifted above the ground - a design found nowhere else in Indian handloom.

Two weavers work it together, one seated, one standing, moving in sync. The reason comes down to a defining feature of Patola: the saree looks identical on both sides - front and back are indistinguishable, because both the warp and weft are dyed and aligned with equal precision.

Weaving a fabric with no "wrong side" requires a loom built specifically for that demand, worked from both ends at once, top and bottom perfectly aligned throughout.

It's a small detail, but it says something bigger: even the tool used to make a Patola saree exists for no other purpose. Nothing about this craft is generic - not the dye process, not the thread, not even the loom it's woven on.
